Taberna Antonio Sánchez
The Taberna Antonio Sánchez was founded in 1787 and since then it has been uninterruptedly open and run by people linked to the bullfighting world. Today it is the oldest tavern in Madrid without being refurbished, as the decoration of this tavern has remained intact since its origin and you can still see the gas lamps that used to light the place, the bottle lift from the cellar, the walls painted with medallions with the faces of the old bullfighters, Frascuelo, Lagartijo and Cara Ancha, who often came to drink more than a glass of wine with a torrija. The Taberna has also been a meeting place in its literary gatherings of personalities such as Pio Baroja, Sorolla, Marañón Camba… In the Taberna Antonio Sánchez they continue to work to maintain the secrets of traditional Spanish ‘home-made’ cuisine and to ensure that its production processes do not fall into disuse.
