Casa Alberto
To know Casa Alberto is to know one of the temples of Madrid’s gastronomy, located in the Barrio de las Letras. Since it opened its doors in 1827, it has never stopped enjoying success. Its cuisine is a perfect example that gastronomic tradition is not at odds with modern presentation. Some of its most traditional dishes include oxtail, Madrid-style cod, tripe, beef meatballs, lamb’s trotters, ham croquettes, and the classic spoon dishes that are always present on its menu, as well as homemade desserts.
It is said that in this old building, Miguel de Cervantes wrote one of his most famous works, “Viaje al Parnaso.” From this period, the establishment retains the characteristic elements of a traditional Madrid tavern, such as the sink with its book, its taps, the unique onyx counter, tables with stools, forged iron columns, wooden skirting boards, shelves with bottles, the frasca bottles, and the wine serving measures.
Miguel de Cervantes lived in this very building in 1613 and 1614. Here he wrote several chapters of the second part of Don Quixote and The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda, and it is here that he completed his work Viaje al Parnaso.
