Café Gijón is a meeting place for great writers, painters, sculptors, journalists, actors… a place for passionate debates where the social, cultural, and even political activity of various periods in the establishment’s history is discussed daily, as it has been since its opening in 1888. In May of that year, Gumersindo Gómez, a native of Asturias, settled in Madrid and opened Café Gijón, which continues to this day, initially run by its founder, later by Benigno López and his descendants, and since 1997 by Gregorio Escamilla Saceda.

Throughout its history, the establishment has been a cultural hub, not only because of the debates held daily in its rooms but also as the venue where the annual “Café Gijón” Novel Prize (founded by Fernando Fernán Gómez) is awarded. This prize is organized every year by the Town Hall of the Asturian town and presented annually in Madrid.

At this establishment, the annual “Café Gijón” Novel Prize (founded by Fernando Fernán Gómez) is awarded.
